In this series, artist Wang Yuyang meticulously applies a proprietary magnetized thermochromic paint across the canvas, harnessing the principles of electromagnetic interactions to orchestrate an elaborate composition. Within the ambit of the Quantum Hall Effect, this bespoke paint materializes boundary states that span energy gaps along the canvas’s perimeter, aligning with a topological count and generating a spin that endows the material with a three-dimensional quality, challenging the two-dimensional plane and conjuring an illusion of depth. This chromatic metamorphosis aspires to craft a colorless mark, a malleable and open-ended possibility, capturing the dynamic essence of here and now. Upon intimate inspection, the canvas reveals minuscule pores, the natural progeny of magnetic interplay. The texture of the canvas spontaneously evolves, and at its edges, an intense dynamism ignites a spin luminescence that emanates from within. This spectacle unfolds at the nanoscale, eluding direct visual apprehension, yet we perceive the vortex on the plane, undulating like water’s surface, with unpredictable lines materializing like enigmatic ripples, beckoning introspection. For many who encounter this series, it evokes the genesis of script, such as the oracle bones carved by tools, each divination a celestial-human nexus, a quest into the unseen. The artist has relinquished personal manipulation, giving rise to a dynamic energy field. In 1958, Lucio Fontana pierced the canvas with his knife, positing that the canvas was “not, or no longer, a support, but an illusion”. The act of piercing was not one of destruction but of construction. Wang Yuyang aspires to create a vortex transcending recognizable imagery; it is not a traceable rule from the dawn of writing but a palpable act, intending to carve out an open space. In an epoch where the sense of presence is meager, his work resonates with the way of treading water, each brushstroke birthing a nebulous form, within which a sensibility emerges.
